Traditions of the Peoples of Ivory Coast
Rodrigue "Obodjé" KOUAME is a self-taught Ivorian painter and accounting student.
He was born on April 20, 1992, in Agboville, Ivory Coast.
Rodrigue "Obodjé" KOUAME is a rising star in Ivorian contemporary art in particular, and African art in general. He blends Pop Art and Street Art. His works are primarily created using acrylic paints, inks, and spray paint. His inspiration comes from his tribal roots; through his art, he transcribes tales and legends of the Akan people, who live between central and southwestern Ivory Coast and Ghana.
He works to preserve African culture in general, and in particular the culture of the Akan people, from whom he originates.
His technique involves starting several works simultaneously and completing them one at a time. To fully express his inspiration, Rodrigue "Obodjé" Kouame enjoys working on large-scale pieces, ranging from 50x50cm to 1x1m.
For economic reasons, he works on canvas, 300gsm paper, and Bristol board.
He participated in his first exhibition in 2017, at the Dan Arts and Culture Festival, Tonkpi Nihidaley, from December 7th to 12th, 2017, in Man: Dances, Music, Masks, and Encounters.
For 2018, he has already been selected to participate in another exhibition, the JAA 2018, from April 27th to May 1st, 2018, in Abidjan.
Rodrigue “Obodjé” Kouamé draws inspiration from shapes, drawings, tags, and graffiti, transforming them with his own unique style.
He uses them as a mirror, sometimes even recycling older works.
Many African painters express themselves through paintings, canvases, and sculptures. Contemporary painting is a colorful and expressive world of creation. Contemporary and modern African art is not a single entity; it is diverse and varied. The concept of Africanness is important in the expression of African artists; indeed, should we speak of African artists or artists of Africa? Fo Koudjo is the first African artist whose works are presented in the gallery. The combination of African art and crafts with modern African painting allows us to showcase the past and present of African art. The gallery will present exhibitions of modern and contemporary African art, including photographs, artworks, objects, sculptures, paintings, and images representing all forms of African expression.
Contemporary African art reflects the vitality and diversity of inspirations of contemporary African artists. Ancient tribal societies blend with modern Africa, and sometimes even with the modern Western world, as some African artists live or have lived in Europe.
