The Yoruba live between Nigeria and Benin, in a region covered in forest and savannah. The slave trade had a significant impact on the Yoruba population and contributed to the spread of their rites and beliefs. There were four times more twin births among the Yoruba than in the rest of the world.

The Ibedji statuettes are among the most famous Yoruba sculptures. These fetishes represent deceased twins, venerated with libations and prayers, which influence the daily lives of families.
